We asked Jonathan Polk, the man in charge of the John Lennon Box of Vision and who's also coordinating the John Lennon Time Capsule project, to give a quick rundown on what you need to know about it, including what you need to do to add your contribution.
.
Q: What kind of contributions are to be included?
Jonathan Polk: The fan contributions are all videos. Many are fans speaking to the world of 2040 when the time capsules will be opened talking about John and what his legacy means to them. Some are performances of Lennon songs. Some are great "art pieces" set to Lennon recordings. Most are really heartfelt pieces. We will be showing a number of the best ones at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on Oct. 8.
Q: What else (if anything) will be included?
Jonathan Polk: All of John's solo recordings (the new EMI remasters). Of course; the new John Lennon Box of Vision with LP size art prints of all of John's, and John and Yoko's, album artwork; a specially commissioned career overview essay by Bruce Spizer; reproductions of a number of classic John and John and Yoko album ads. A DVD of John's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A copy of Jim Henke's book "Lennon Legend.". A copy of the Imagine Peace Tower book. Each time capsule will include two sealed notes from Yoko, to be opened and revealed for the first time in 2040 -- so there will be 6 notes in all, to be revealed in unison. We are working on a few additional items relating to, and press coverage of, this year's 70th birthday events (a few "breakfast" radio shows and hopefully some tv shows). Some other items still being worked on-- some to be anounced and others not to be revealed until October 9, 2040. And, of course, a DVD/CD player, to make sure the people of 2040 can play the music and videos -- if CDs and DVDs look like wax cylinders in 2040.
Q: Where will they be stored?
Jonathan Polk: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will store one in their new permanent archives building. Liverpool John Moores University will store one in the archives of their School of Art & Design, the art college that Lennon attended (then known as the Liverpool College of Art) and the venue for early band rehearsals with Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Stuart Sutcliffe as The Quarrymen. The third time capsule will be going to Reykjavik, Iceland -- details to be anounced shortly.
Q: How is Yoko Ono participating?
Jonathan Polk: As mentioned above, she is contributing a series of six sealed notes as the backbone of the 2040 ceremony revealing the overall contents. She has been helpful in enabling us to arrange everything, and very gracious in giving her blessing to the project.
Q: How do people get their contributions into the time capsule?
Jonathan Polk: They can upload SHORT videos www.boxofvision.com/timecapsule.
Q: When is the deadline for contributing?
Jonathan Polk: October 1. It was extended from Sept. 15 at the request of Liverpool John Moores, as they are working on some student contributions.
