It says a lot when a trivia game has an aggravating interface for one of its mini-games, but you still have a hard time putting it down.
So what happens when the game fixes the interface?
It becomes a good news-bad news scenario. And for Movie Challenge, a fantastic iPhone movie trivia game by Redwind Software, the good news is that the annoyance of trying to slide movie titles into the correct slots in the Order mini-game is gone, and the new interface is very smooth. The bad news is that it makes the game all the more addicting.
The great thing about Movie Challenge for the iPhone is the variety. The board has ten different categories, like Action, Actors, Comedy or Directors, and to win a slot on the board, you have to win at one, two or three mini-games (depending on difficulty). There are even three different ways to play the game: Classic, Pass 'n Play (a multiplayer mode), or Blindfold, where you won't know the categories or mini-games until you compete in them.
There are even neat little power-ups that allow you to do things like extend the time you have to solve the mini-game or re-jumble the board, which can be real handy if you are stuck with only an animated category left but you are bad at animated trivia.
Here are the different mini-games offered in Movie Challenge:

Jumble. This one is pretty difficult. You are given a phrase, and you have to figure out which movie title uses the exact same letters.
Order. A nice test of your knowledge of movie history, you put movies by a director or starring an actor into their order, from oldest to newest and sometimes from least box office sales to most.
Preview. This one is like hangman for movies. You pick out letters, and as you unlock more of the words, you'll have an easier time guessing the letters. My advice: go for all the vowels first.
Quotes. This one not only has quotes, but also movie tag lines. It's a multiple choice, but can still be quite challenging.
Trivia. My favorite, it is what it is, a trivia question.
True/False. The greatest thing about this mini-game is that you've always got a 50/50 chance even if you don't have a clue.
What Year? By far the one I like the least because, quite frankly, how am I to know when Psycho was released? Luckily, you get two tries and it'll tell you if you need to go higher or lower.
In the previous version, which had a few annoyances in the interface, I was hesitant about recommending anyone go beyond the lite version -- which, by the way, is a great game and well worth the download. Now with the interface of the Order mini-game cleared up and fewer stuck keys popping up in the Preview game, I'd definitely recommend spending the $1.99.
If you like movie trivia, it'll be the easiest two bucks you've ever spent.
