Puppy bites are cute; but they will soon be bigger dogs that have teeth used to crush bones?
My wife was surprised by a puppy one Valentine Day. My brother often cared for the pup and they would innocently wrestle with puppy holding & mouthing the hands.
Cover photo show older Snookums ready to bite. Do not disturb me! The author knew training a dog to bite human hands was not a good Idea for obvious reasons mentioned above. However, I didn't want the hassle teaching my brother a new technique of puppy play like with an old sock. Besides human baby’s mouth everything and they outgrow it!
This puppy never out grew chewing on human hands for fun and as he got older. My wife was, within a month or two, terrified of her Valentine gift. He snapped at her to explain “I am in charge here!”
A Year later of various dog trainers and technique; I tragically took “Snookums” to the Vet to put him asleep.
He had an ear infection and he would not let me apply medicine for treatment without snarling and by now he knew what the muzzle was for and go luck with that.
It was a tough spot between a rock and a hard crevice. If once cute Snookums would not let me treat his ear infection, then he’d die a painful sullen death; so I got put him down before anyone else is hurt by this now aggressive dog? Vets tried to place him with other owners; but no one wanted Snookums now.
Naturally it fell to me to solve the situation and this cute puppy evolved quite innocently into a non-people friendly lawsuit pending. He knew how to control people and he was the boss!
My wife was relieved when we put down her little Valentine Puppy that turned out or was innocently train to be a nightmare!
What do the experts say?
Puppies spend a great deal of time playing, chewing and investigating objects. All of these normal activities involve puppies using their mouths and their needle-sharp teeth. When puppies play with people, they often bite, chew and mouth on people’s hands, limbs and clothing. This kind of behavior may seem cute when your puppy is seven weeks old, but it’s not nearly so endearing when he’s three or four months old-and getting bigger by the day!”
What to Do About Puppy Mouthing
“It’s important to help your puppy learn to curb his mouthy behavior. There are various ways, some better than others, to teach this lesson. The ultimate goal is to train your puppy to stop mouthing and biting people altogether. However, the first and most important objective is to teach him that people have very sensitive skin, so he must be very gentle when using his mouth”.
Bite Inhibition: Teach Your Puppy to Be Gentle
“Bite inhibition refers to a dog’s ability to control the force of his mouthing. A puppy or dog that hasn’t learned bite inhibition with people doesn’t recognize the sensitivity of human skin, and so he bites too hard, even in play. Some behaviorists and trainers believe that a dog who has learned to use his mouth gently when interacting with people will be less likely to bite hard and break skin if he ever bites someone in a situation apart from play-like when he’s afraid or in pain.”
The only good thing about a painful mistake is one can share this very sad experience; so hopefully no other human has to experience it ever again.
I leave my readers with a good video to train your puppy.
