That's the slogan on a new billboard put up by the American Humanist Association on Highway 95, a high traffic area just south of Moscow, Idaho. It's part of an advertising campaign by the AHA and other groups that has seen billboards with similar humanist slogans put up in Arizona, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Florida.
Karen Frantz, a spokesperson for the American Humanist Association, said, “We want nontheists to know that there is a community out there for them and that it’s okay not to believe in a God. Many feel alienated and vilified for their lack of belief.”
It is the second AHA billboard to go up in the Moscow, Idaho area. The first one, which went up in April, read, "Don't believe in God? You are not alone" and generated a response from a local businessman who put up a sign that read, "You are not alone -- God". So far the new sign hasn't generated a similar response.
This is the mission statement from AHA's website:
"For more than half a century, the American Humanist Association has stood as the singular voice of humanism in the United States.
We strive to bring about a progressive society where being 'good without god' is an accepted way to live life. We are accomplishing this through our defense of civil liberties and secular governance, by our outreach to the growing number of people without religious belief or preference, and through a continued refinement and advancement of the humanist worldview.
Bordered on one side by the transcendental views of traditional religions and mythologies and on the other by atheism and secularism, the values we hold are grounded in the philosophy of the Enlightenment, informed by scientific knowledge, and driven by a desire to meet the needs of people in the here and now.
We count humanists and other nontheists as the core of our movement but are always willing to work with friends and allies on issues of common concern. The positions we hold and the actions we take are not simply for our own benefit, but for the betterment of all of society."
