The man credited with inventing the Frisbee, Walter Fredrick Morrison died this week at his home in Utah, after a struggle with cancer. Morrison, 90, created the Frisbee and sold the idea to Wham-O in 1957 and he didn’t get rich off of his idea.

"Fred's the one who thought of commercializing something that people had been doing forever -- picking up a round, flat object and watching it sail," said Phil Kennedy, Morrison's biographer.

More than 200 million Frisbees have been sold around the world.

"It's so simple that anyone could pick it up and fly it acceptably well in a few minutes," Kennedy said. "It's inexpensive and adaptable to existing games and to new games," CNN reported.

Morrison got the idea for the Frisbee in 1937 after someone tossed a tin lid to him and he watched it sail through the air, according to a CNN live report. He used a cake pan and practiced his flying idea and then sold them for a quarter on beaches around Los Angeles.

Several mourners plan to bring a Frisbee to his Saturday morning memorial service in Salt Lake City.
