On Nov. 8, the Disney Parks Blog announced Cast Members have been play-testing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Disney also released more information on the interactive game, representative of Disney’s implementation of NextGen technology.
As previously revealed, Guests become apprenticed to Merlin the magician, who will help these brave souls find and the Disney Villains that attempt to take over the Magic Kingdom. (The storyline sounds very similar to Ridley Pearson’s “Kingdom Keepers” series of novels for young readers.)
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom sounds like the next evolution of Disney’s interactive games, with elements similar to Kim Possible at Epcot, Mickey’s Midship Detective Agency on the Disney Dream cruise ship, or the Menehune Adventure trail at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa.
Today, Disney revealed Sorcerers will be implemented as a trading-card game. Guests will be given maps and clues to locate the Disney Villains. The game uses special cards that represent magic spells (“fireballs to frantic frogs and cyclones”) and which will enable players to defeat each villain. Guests will cast their spells by waving the cards in front of the game’s interactive locations.
While Disney has been cagey on the locations, as part of the fun of the game, but locations will include several spots in Adventureland. Other locations in Liberty Square, Frontierland and Fantasyland have been identified in Disney fan discussion forums.
For a look at some unidentified (to keep a measure of surprise) locations in Adventureland, see the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom photos.
Villains who are expected to be part of the game include Scar, Stitch (who seems a bit more prankish than villain-ish), Yzma and Kronk, two of the baddies from 2000’s “The Emperor’s New Groove.”
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom does not cost extra, but will be included with theme-park admission when the game some time early in 2012. It's worth noting that, of course, as the game develops, details and dates may be subject to change.
