Two Louisiana Walmarts were bombarded today with Food Stamp recipients who stood in line waiting to take advantage of a glitch in the EBT system. According to a Walmart spokesperson, the system provided all recipients an unlimited amount of funds instead of their normal monthly stipend. There were long lines, disagreements, and an overall sense of urgency to purchase as many food products as possible.
It is unknown how the customers became aware of their unlimited spending status, but it was evident that Walmart was not equipped to handle such a public response. The police were called to manage the chaotic situation and ensured that all customers stood in line before entering the store. The EBT recipients weren't the only benefactors in this event. Walmart allowed the shoppers to purchase hundreds of dollars’ worth of groceries until the limits were reestablished. The store was overloaded with customers to a point where store shelves were emptied and there weren’t enough cashiers to check out customers. Will the pillaging recipients be responsible for the amount spent during the glitch, and will the government deem their actions as theft?
