A Walmart employee was shot and another man robbed over the weekend in Gwinnett County.
And police on Tuesday continued their search for the two suspects who stole one of the men’s vehicle.
The incident began at 2:50 a.m. at the Walmart at 1825 Rockbridge Road in Stone Mountain, according to Gwinnett County police.
The first victim, a 20-year-old man whose name has not been released, pulled into a parking space near the main entrance to the store, police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.
As he walked toward the building, he was approached by two men, one of whom produced a handgun and demanded the man’s car keys and wallet. The gunman then went to the victim’s 2010 Honda Fit, started it, and remained inside, Cpl. Smith said.
Just prior to the robbery, the second victim, a 35-year-old Walmart employee, arrived in the parking lot. After he emerged from his vehicle he saw the first victim in a conversation with one of the suspects, Cpl. Smith said. He did not see a gun.
The second victim only speaks Albanian, and did not understand what was occurring. When he passed the two men, the suspect addressed him. But the man, not understanding, continued toward the entrance.
“As the second victim continued toward the entrance of Walmart, the second suspect fired one shot, striking the second victim in the thigh,” Cpl. Smith said. “At that point, both victims ran into the Walmart, and the second suspect ran to the waiting vehicle”
Both suspects fled in the Honda and the wounded employee was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators, after reviewing surveillance footage, discovered that the suspects had arrived at the Walmart in a vehicle that had been stolen in a carjacking in Atlanta, Cpl. Smith said.
Atlanta police located the stolen Honda Fit in their jurisdiction Sunday evening. Both stolen vehicles have been recovered for processing. A handgun matching the description of the weapon used in the shooting was recovered in the Honda Fit.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (404) 557-8477 or Gwinnett Police detectives at (770) 513-5300.
