Walking the Dog Day: 'Howliday' is good for you and Fido

February is going to the dogs! Literally! While February 20 celebrates pets of all shapes and sizes on Love Your Pet Day and National Dog Biscuit Day is celebrated on February 23, February 22 celebrates an activity dog's love. It's Walking the Dog Day!

Walking the Dog Day

While it may not seem that special to us, mutts, pedigrees and purebred pooches all across the nation look forward to this yearly "howliday" all year long! Walking the Dog Day encourages pet owners to get out of the house and take that special pooch in your life for a good long walk. Whether it's around the block, the neighborhood or at the local park, walking is not only good for Fido, it's good for you as well! In fact, researchers found that walking the dog may provide more exercise for humans than going to the gym! Not to mention the fact you get some quality, one-on-one time with Fido.

It's also important to remember that obesity is not only a human problem, many of our beloved four-legged friends are also overweight. According to a study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, more than half of the felines and canines in America are considered overweight or obese. There are currently more than 88 million fat cats and dogs living in America today.

Walking the Dog Week, a week-long event created in 2010 by Animal Miracle Foundation & Networks founder, Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert and animal advocate, Colleen Paige, is celebrated in October.

In honor of Walking the Dog Day, why not start a new routine and take Fido for a daily walk? February 22 is also National Margarita Day!
