AMC's Walking Dead is a monster hit pulling in a record 16.1 million viewers, with many new viewers being women. Just why the series is drawing in more and more women viewers is somewhat of a mystery, given the gory nature of the show, but the show has increased it's viewership by 4 million since last season. Not only has viewership gone up, but ad rates have skyrocketed as well. Ad rates for a 30 second spot during the show now goes for as much as $600,000.
The success of The Walking Dead has also spurred a boom in zombie related merchandise and spin-off media as well. Self described "Walker Stalkers" Eric Nordoff and James Frazier have created a popular podcast that discusses plot points of the show and features cast and crew interviews. The men have also coordinated the first Walking Dead fan convention to be held in Atlanta, GA, on November 1st through the 3rd. The convention will feature some of The Walking Dead actors Norman Reedus, Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Choen, and is expected to draw in over 10,000 fans.
As for the show's 4th season, the creators say they have a lot of surprises in store for fans and promise that this season will be the best season yet. Fans are already speculating that the death of Carl's pig and friend (one of the older boys in the camp) may be clues that the virus is now airborne.
If that's true, all I can say is whoa mamma!
