Minnesota has been the backdrop for many prominent films including The Mighty Ducks, Grumpy Old Men, and A Prairie Home Companion. At this weekend's Location MN: Celebrating Films Made in Minnesota you'll see none of the aforementioned pictures, but some good flicks nonetheless.
The ten films screening this extended weekend at the Walker Art Center are not presented as the best of Minnesota made films, but rather a sampling of the sights inherently Minnesota. Or are they? The methodology in the selection of the films is not available anywhere, and while it's great to see Ali Selim's charming Sweet Land on the schedule, it's unclear what exactly brings Purple Haze or Northern Lights to the schedule while leaving out, say, Airport.
Beyond the obligatory inclusion of Fargo, which, for better and worse, is probably the movie most widely associated with Minnesota productions, are recognizable pictures like Purple Rain, A Simple Plan, and Mallrats. Then the schedule features lesser known films such as Trauma, the short Snow, and the recent Factotum from Minnesota producer, Christine Walker. Regardless of IMDb rating or box office grosses, each film is worthy of a peek and this weekend is as good a time as any to check them out.
