Walk your way to fundraising for good causes

Organizations around the country host walks and the like as a means of fundraising for their programs. Often these events garner the lion's share of the funds used throughout the year. There are two such upcoming, local events that take place next weekend.

On Saturday, September 24, the 2011 Minnesota Walk Now for Autism Speaks will take place at the Mall of America. The day opens with registration at 7:00 a.m. with the walk from 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. A resources fair, providing information to families, friends, and others, will highlight autism service providers and take place from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In addition, following the race, the Theatres at Mall of America will have a free sensory-friendly screening of the movie Yogi Bear.

On Sunday, September 25, the Minnesota Down Syndrome Association (DSAMN) will host its 14th annual Step Up for Down Syndrome walk in St. Paul. 7,000 people are expected to descend upon Como Park beginning with check in at 10:30 a.m. There will be face painting, kid games, moon walks, and more with the walk itself starting at noon. Lunch at the park follows the walk.

Each of these events provide families with an opportunity to relax a bit, have fun, and enjoy the company of many who are on similar journeys. Plus, it helps these great organizations continue to provide resources, programming, and more. Which walk will you be attending? Or, will you attend both?
