Walk-on Jordan Congdon walks into starting job at kicker

Jordan Congdon will be the University of Southern California's kicker when the season opens against the Spartans of San Jose State on September 5th. The walk-on kicker earned freshman All-American honors with Nebraska in 2005 but moved back to California after two years with the Cornhuskers.

Congdon earned notoriety after his clutch-kick against Kansas State towards the end of the 2005 season. Congdon's field goal helped the Huskers earn an Alamo Bowl bid as well as the 2006 Big 12 North title.

"I thought Jordan separated a little bit here in his numbers. We kept track of everything they did -- the timing, all that stuff, and Jordan finished with considerably better numbers,” said USC coach Pete Carroll according to Tim Griffin of ESPN.

The development of Congdon is a good sign that the Trojans have found a replacement for recent NFL draftee, David Buehler. Buehler, who has a growing cult following, provided the Trojans with an incredibly strong leg, constantly pinning the opponent with booming touchbacks on kickoffs.

Jordan Congdon has some big shoes to fill when it comes to replacing former kicker Buehler and it remains to be seen if he will see any spot duty at fullback or safety as Buehler did. No word yet on whether Jordan plans on racing any defensive backs in a 50-yard dash.
