Addiction means to be controlled by, enslaved to, or compelled to engage in a particular habit of practice. Many feel that addictions are just drinking, drug abuse, and pornography. Addiction goes beyond that. Eating disorders, shopping, and gaming are all addictions. So what does the Bible say about addictions?

1st Corinthians 6:12 states; “Everything is permissible for me –but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me –but I will not be mastered by anything.” Drinking alcohol is permissible, but being an alcoholic is a sin. The same goes for television, caffeine, money, celebrities, winning, music, tattoos, sex, types of food, any addiction. Matthew 6:24 tells us; “You must choose who you will serve; God, or your addictions. You can’t serve both.

Being drunk or high is a sin. Why? Because when one is under the influence of a substance he or she is mastered by that substance. Moreover, impurity, idolatry, and drunkenness can prevent one from going to Heaven without repentance (Galatians 5:19-21).

Are you addicted to anything? Turn to God because He is the only way out of any addiction. We want to encourage you to be in a relationship with Christ such that you read the Bible for yourself and let the Holy Spirit within discern what activities you should participate in. 1st Corinthians 10:13 says; “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
