This week in Baltimore, you can find a number ways to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The city is throwing a parade on Monday and several museums have activities and exhibits to celebrate the life the civil rights activist. Some private schools are using the occasion to educate students about Dr. King by hosting speakers, and others will spend the day doing volunteer work for social service organizations across the city.
Community invited to hear C. Fraser Smith to speak on civil rights at Waldorf School
Tomorrow, Saturday, January 15, the Waldorf School of Baltimore will host its Civil Rights Brunch, an annual event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s event features C. Fraser Smith, who will dicsuss Maryland’s Place in the Civil Rights Movement. Smith, a former columnist for The Baltimore Sun and current WYPR commentator and Daily Record columnist, has written three books, including Here Lies Jim Crow: Civil Rights in Maryland, published in 2008.
The Civil Rights Brunch s offered as a community event for the school’s students, parents, faculty, and neighbors. Attendees will receivesunflower seed packets as part of the Weed Out Hate—Sow the Seeds of Peace project, founded by Marc Daniels. This national effort to weed out hate and bring people together in sowing seeds and feeding roots of cooperation, ecology, and education offers a much-needed message in today’s world.
Friends School to hold Annual Day of Service on Monday
Friends School students from Kindergarten to grade 12 will use their school holiday on Monday to live Dr. King’s dream. Almost 400 participants have registered to volunteer for in a variety of service opportunities to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. With some 15 activities both on and off campus they will be helping the old, the young, the homeless, the hungry, the sick and of course, the environment.
