Walden Media’s exclusive ‘Narnia’ film option expires

After a flurry of rumors and news bits, NarniaWeb has reported that Walden Media no longer has exclusive rights to the rest of the Chronicles of Narnia books.

According to the website,

During the negotiations between Fox, Walden, and the C.S. Lewis Estate, the film option that Walden Media owned was allowed to expire and Walden Media no longer has exclusive purchasing rights to any further Narnia films. …This has been confirmed to us by representatives of the C.S. Lewis Estate.

And while Walden and Fox have confirmed they are both interested in making more Narnia films, our understanding is that, by law, the C.S. Lewis Estate must wait a certain period of time (called a moratorium) before they can sell the film option for the Narnia books again. And when they do, it will be available to any film company out there      interested in bidding on it, not just Walden and Fox.

So, as of now, the future of the Narnia film franchise is entirely in the hands of the Lewis Estate. It does not mean there will be no more films. On the contrary, Douglas Gresham, the stepson of Narnia author C.S. Lewis, has stated on many occasions that his dream is to make all seven books into films. Now it will just take longer to do. Fans will have to wait at least a few years before seeing another Narnia film. Regardless, it is disappointing to see these wonderful stories struggle to become films.

Do you believe the rest of the books will be filmed? Remember what Reepicheep said in the Dawn Treader film: “We have nothing if not belief.” Debate it here on the Examiner discussion boards.

Nate Marchand discovered C.S. Lewis during high school. While attending Taylor University Fort Wayne, he took a class on his works, which included The Chronicles of Narnia. Nate graduated with a B.A. in professional writing.
