Pacquiao confidante Salud says Pacquiao should not have said he is willing to take smaller pot to fight Mayweather and why I think he is right.

Rex "Wakee" Salud, a known and trusted Manny Pacquiao confidante and insider in the Philippines, spoke to DZSR Sports Radio 918's Snow Badua recently and shared his opinion regarding Pacquiao's recent statements that he is willing to take the smaller piece of the pie to make the superfight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. happen.

Salud was quoted by Badua in Tagalog saying: "Mali yung sinabi ni MANNY PACQUIAO na payag agad sila sa mas maliit na kita. Imbes na makuha si MAYWEATHER, magdedemand lalo un"

"Hindi ako sang-ayon dun. Hindi dapat minamadali ang negosasyon. Baka mas lalong maging pakipot kausap mo, pagnagbigay ka agad."

Translation: "Pacquiao was wrong in saying that he is already willing to take the smaller amount. Instead of getting Mayweather, that guy will demand more."

"I don't agree with that. Negotiations aren't supposed to be rushed. They may hold back some more if you relent right away."

Salud pointed out Pacquiao's current Pay-per-View successes and his status in boxing right now as his bargaining chips on why Pacquiao should have not said he is willing to take less.

"Si PACQUIAO ang bida ngayon ng boxing HINDI NA SI MAYWEATHER. Consistent si MANNY sa 1.4M sa Pay per view. Si Floyd hindi"

Si MANNY PACQUIAO laging hindi bumababa sa 1.3 Million sa PAY PER VIEW. Yung last fight ni MAYWEATHER, walang 1 Million buys un"

"Yung nilabas nila na 1.5 daw ang kinita ng MAYWEATHER-ORTIZ. Hindi ako naniniwala dun. GOLDEN BOY LANG NAGLABAS nun, Hindi HBO."

Translation: "Pacquiao is the man right now, not Mayweather. Manny is consistent with 1.4 Pay-per-Views, Floyd isn't."

"Manny Pacquiao doesn't go below 1.3 Pay-per-Views. Mayweather's last fight didn't even hit 1 million buys."

"The numbers they released for Mayweather-Ortiz, I don't believe in that. It's Golden Boy that put that out there, not HBO."

Now as much as fans, especially Pacquiao fans, are eager to see this fight happen, Salud made some very valid points; Pacquiao is the Fighter of the Decade after all and has been the top dog since Mayweather launched his comeback in 2009.

Pacquiao's willingness to take the smaller piece of the pie, as much as it is generous and charitable of him, are cards he should've mucked in this poker-style negotiations he's going through in making this fight with Mayweather happen.

I also recently stumbled upon an article by Examiner Granville Ampong blatantly stating that it's not newsworthy for Pacquiao to say he's willing to take less than Mayweather. Ampong wrote: "It's expected Pacquiao would have to take less money in order to sign the contract."

Ampong pointed out Pacquiao's underdog status in the betting lines as his main reason why he should take less than Floyd, and even gave a mathematics lesson that any 1st grade teacher would be proud of.

Here are some more excerpts from this self-proclaimed "lead writer" of Philboxing.com's recent blog:

"Let us lay down relevant circumstantial values before we delve into the final point of random blood-testing. It's given: Pound-for-Pound King Floyd Mayweather, Jr. categorically has the upper-hand over WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao.

Immediately status-post fight of Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy, Pacquiao took a downward slope at + 220 versus towering climb by Mayweather, Jr. to -300, which meant betting $100 for Mayweather would only win $ 33.33 and betting $100 for Pacquiao would win $220.

And today, as of this writing, Pacquiao suffers with an all-time low at +350 versus Mayweather, Jr.'s inversely deepening high at -500.

If the fight were held today and a bet of $ 100 for Mayweather, Jr. and granting he wins, one would win only $ 20. And with the same proposition, a bet of $ 100 for Pacquiao and granting he wins, one would win $ 350."

As much as I commend Ampong for his calculating talents, I could not disagree more with his misguided statements.

Under his logic, if Oscar Dela Hoya comes out of retirement to fight say, Erislandy Lara or Sergio Martinez for example, Lara and Martinez should get the bigger piece of the pie since they will be the betting favorites against Dela Hoya.

When Dela Hoya fought Mayweather back in 2008, Mayweather was the 2-1 betting favorite.

In my hypothetical example, Dela Hoya would make more money, because he is the bigger draw.

In my historical example, Dela Hoya made a ton more money than Mayweather because he was the bigger star.

And with that, it's safe to say that the "betting favorite gets more money theory" fails miserably and should be flushed in the toilet where it belongs... or do you want me to waste both our time and point out more examples?

A 50-50 split should be good for Pacquiao and Mayweather, but I do commend Pacquiao's benevolence for being willing to take less so he can give fans what they want, as opposed to Mayweather who continues to make negotiations difficult to make by demanding more money, going on vacations, demanding extra drug tests on top of everything else. Here's hoping Pacquiao just kept it to himself... at least for the time being.
