In March 2010, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) rescued 163 dogs and 2 cats from Raven's Hope Animal Sanctuary in Preston, Mississippi. Raven’s Hope, a non-profit organization that claimed to take in needy animals and adopt them out, was finally investigated after the local sheriff’s department received numerous complaints of suspected neglect on the property. When HSUS arrived on the scene, they found that the majority of the dogs were covered with mange and suffering from a variety of medical problems, including gunshot wounds.
Heidi, a seven-year-old hound girl, was among the dogs rescued from this living nightmare. Having lived entirely outdoors, this sweet girl was emaciated and so covered in mange that she had no hair anywhere on her body. Thankfully for Heidi, she landed at the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL), where she has spent weeks in treatment for her physical and emotional injuries. Her hair has returned and her body weight has increased; she’s now considered healthy and ready for a new home of her own.
While weeks of rehabilitation with WARL trainers have dramatically improved her behaviors, Heidi still has hesitation in new situations. Having lived much of her life without regular human interaction, Heidi is quite shy with new people. As such, WARL is hoping to place her in a home with canine companionship to help this loving girl transition to life in a home.
“Because she really adores other dogs, Heidi would make an ideal second dog,” according to Jamie Scotto, Director of Adoptions and rescue at WARL. “Look at her like your dog’s dog; she’d be perfect for that.”
Once adjusted to her new surroundings, Heidi shows her true love for people, becoming a rather affectionate and loyal dog. She’ll be the perfect family addition for a person searching for a calm, quiet dog who will need a little time to adjust to a loving home environment. WARL staff is hopeful that the right person will come along soon, as this wonderful dog has been waiting too long for that second chance at life in a safe place.
