The 2009 Wags for Wishes event will be held July 10-12, 2009 at the Otay Ranch Town Center, Chula Vista, CA.

“The best part about Wags for Wishes is that everyone can participate,” says Chris Sichel, Executive Director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego, “This year, five different events are open to the public: field lure coursing, splash dogs, Canine Good Citizen, Rally-O and Freestyle. The public is invited to come and see what their dog can do!”

There are also events dog sports enthusiasts have been preparing for that you and your dog can watch and learn how to prepare to enter yourselves at other area competitions throughout the year.  Agility, flyball and disc dogs are among the dog sports events.

A new event “Walk for Wishes” sponsored by the San Diego County Credit Union has been added this year as well.  Individuals and teams will walk a one mile course ending at the Wags for Wishes venue.  The event raises money for the Make a Wish Foundation and proceeds are used to grant wishes to San Diego children who are battling life-threatening medical conditions.  The event is July 11, 2009 at 8:30 am.  You can find more information at www.WalkforWishesSD.org

Wags for Wishes runs from July 10-12, 2009, 9:00 am - 5 pm daily at the Otay Ranch Town Center, 2015 Olympic Pkwy, Chula Vista, CA.  Admission and parking are free.  For more information visit www.WagsforWishes.com

Bring your Dog:

This is a great place to bring your dog.  Make sure you have a well behaved dog and dogs must be on leash at all times.

If you have been wishing you could take your dog more places, now is the best time to start.  Many times it is a simple matter of exposure.  Dogs who stay at home in the same area all the time tend to get over excited when going somewhere new.  The best way to train for this behavior is to start the process now and commit to taking your dog to different places that are dog friendly.

It may be frustrating at first but like anything else you do that is new it takes practice.  Training your dog is about creating situations that become normal for your dog.  For instance walking on a leash without pulling means your dog needs to first practice this position without distraction many times over.  Then add distraction and keep the same rules in place.

If its your first time out in a while with your dog and you would like to go to one of the great San Diego dog friendly events like Wags for Wishes, get your dog out for some exercise first.  In other words go for a good walk, play a game of fetch or even take your dog for a good swim at one of the local dog beaches before going to the event.

Don’t let lack of dog training keep you from getting out to a dog friendly event.  Find out more about San Diego dog training camps, private lessons and online dog training programs and start getting out and having fun with your dog today.
