This Wednesday, April 10th, The Blank Club hosts some homegrown ear candy, as the indie-pop kids, Vulture Smile, spends the night screaming and carrying on for anyone who cares to listen.
You should care to listen.
The San Jose quartet brings an ear full of tasty, pop-sensibilities to the stage, in a display of 80s/90s-esque, college-radio rock. Their latest release, "Catholic Guilt," consists of a 4-song demo, filled with stripped down guitars, pleading vocals that switch between open-throat melodies and screams of bloody murder, with sparse (but catchy) keyboard licks.
Their main track, "Downrigger," is an effortless, instantly addictive appeal to the senses. (Go ahead and check the video) It's the kind of song that leads listeners to wonder just how some bands get national recognition, while others don't (the way indie rock should).
In support - quite fittingly, I might add - two local bands grind their already sharp, distinguishing edges. At 10 p.m. Joan and the Rivers are slated to take blues-rock to that edge, while Chunky Turtlenecks jingle-jangle their way into your hearts and minds.
When pressed for their thoughts on Wednesday's show, Vulture Smile had this to add:
"There is only an estimated 4.5 million Turkey Vultures in America. We wish all off them could be there this Wednesday. We want to see every vulture smile."
The Blank Club doors open at 8 p.m. As always, The Blank Club is 21+. Admission is free.
