When you see a police dog, always remember, that fearless canine is also a law enforcement officer. Just like their human handlers and counterparts, these K9s face danger every day. Sadly, K9s have also died in the line of duty. In January 2013, K9 Koda lost his life in an attempted take down of a subject who was fleeing from police. Koda was killed when the subject shot at the K9 and the two deputies who were also in pursuit. When the deputies shot back they wounded the subject and took him into custody. The subject at the time of his arrest was wanted on several warrants.
To protect the dogs who patrol the streets, VPI will match up to $20,000 in donations to Vested Interest in K9s. The funds will go towards financing the purchase of bullet proof K9s vets for approximately 39 active duty police dogs throughout the United States. A police dog can cost a law enforcement agency thousands of dollars to obtain. The loss of K9 can represent a significant loss both emotional and financial for a department. Vesting these law enforcement canines is not only fiscally prudent but also an acknowledgement of the vital role these dogs play in protecting public safety and security.
Op-Ed: The true German Shepherd is a fierce working dog. Aggressive is a very prejudicial assessment. This is the dog that will save your life yet the shelters deem them dangerous and sentence them to be put to sleep?? Foolish!
