Compliments of Wilderness Classroom

Vote Wilderness Classroom in the Canoe & Kayak Magazine Awards. If you have followed this column at all during the last couple of years you are familiar with the Wilderness Classroom, based out of the Chicago suburb of Willow Springs.

The last column I wrote about them had them finally finishing their 11,000 plus mile adventure around North America. Along the way they transmitted their adventure to the computers of thousands of elementary classroom students who tuned in and lived vicariously through them in the classroom and learned about the North American Continent’s wild places.

They are now up for Canoe & Kayak Spirit of Adventure Award. I have not analyzed the other candidates, but it would be hard to top the resume of Dave and Amy Freeman over the last three years.

They circumnavigated the North American continent starting in Seattle, Washington on Earth Day in April of 2010. They kayaked up the northwest passage to Skagway, Alaska, then hiked across a portion of Alaska, Canoed the Dawson River, dogsledded through the Northwest Territories, canoed through Ontario and through the Great Lakes system to the St. Lawrence, braved Hurricane Sandy, and kayaked the Eastern Seaboard to their finish line in the Florida Keys.

I am exhausted even typing out their adventure. How could they not win the Spirit of Adventure. Voting for the award ends on June 30th, so click on the above link now and find Dave and Amy Freeman and give them the love they deserve.

Here is the word from the Wilderness Classroom from their recent press release:
