Three people have been arrested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department and charged with attempted murder after an investigation into an attack on a man Tuesday night. Volusia County Sheriff’s spokesperson Gary Davidson says deputies were called after the 54-year old man showed up at a house in Samsula Tuesday night “…dressed only in his torn underwear and all beaten and bloody and with a rope tied around his neck and wrist.” Sheriff’s investigators said they discovered that the man had been shocked with a stun gun, beaten, and tied to a truck and dragged down a dirt road. They said after being thrown into the back of the truck, the man was able to escape and run away when the truck stopped later. The Sheriff’s Department says the man was treated at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for “…a broken pelvis, broken facial bones and bleeding in his brain.”
Sheriff’s Investigators say they found that the man was watching animals for his ex-wife at her home on High Ridge Lane Tuesday night, and that the two had a written agreement that he was allowed to stay at the home to do so. A deputy accompanied the ex-wife to the home Tuesday afternoon though, as the ex-wife said she wanted to avoid a confrontation with her ex-husband’s girlfriend. The Sheriff’s Department says the ex-husband appeared to be drunk when the ex-wife and deputy arrived Tuesday afternoon. The ex-wife told the Sheriff’s deputy that she would stay with a relative in Edgewater Tuesday night, but did not do so. While she was at the house, her brother also arrived.
Investigators say instead of going to Edgewater, the ex-wife, her brother and a third person started drinking vodka with the ex-husband at the home and then attacked him at some point later in the evening. During the investigation into the incident, deputies say they located the ex-wife and observed that she had “…what appeared to be dried blood on her clothes and hand.” She told deputies it was from breaking up a dog fight earlier. Deputies also located the brother, and said his “…right hand was swollen and the knuckles were cut and bloody and he had a gun.” Investigators said the brother “…wasn’t the least bit remorseful [and] said that it wouldn’t have bothered him if the victim had died….” Later Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Department said it had located and interviewed the third suspect in the case, and had also arrested her. The three charged in the case are 61-year old Jeanette Morris, 63-year old Harold Anderson, and New Smyrna Beach resident 46-year old Joan Hobart. The Sheriff’s Department says all three have been charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, false imprisonment, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.
