Update at 1:15 a.m., September 12, 2013:
The man who Volusia County deputies say attacked an arresting officer and fled Wednesday afternoon was apprehended late Wednesday night in Edgewater. Volusia County Sheriff’s spokesperson Brandon Haught says Luis Alberto Hernandez Dejesus was spotted by a citizen near Blackbeard’s Inn at 701 North Dixie Freeway around 10:30 Wednesday night, “…running awkwardly with his hands in front of him.” Deputies poured into the area as another call came in that Dejesus was seen running south along some railroad tracks. Dejesus, “…still wearing handcuffs…” was taken into custody without incident around 11:10 p.m. at 10th Street and the railroad tracks in Edgewater. The Sheriff’s Office says Dejesus, “…had not suffered any significant injuries….” He was charged with Failure to Properly Register as a Sex Offender, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Escape and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says it is continuing the search for a man who escaped from deputies arresting him Wednesday afternoon. Volusia County Sheriff’s spokesperson Gary Davidson says 31-year old Luis Alberto Hernandez Dejesus “…is a convicted sex offender out of north Florida who has been living in the New Smyrna Beach area.” Deputies had arrested Dejesus Wednesday because he had not registered his new address with law enforcement, as required by Florida law. The Sheriff’s Office says Dejesus was placed in handcuffs and then, “…attacked the deputy, broke free and took off running…” as he was about to be placed in the back of a patrol car. Deputies say Dejesus then ran into a marshy mangrove and jumped into a tributary of the Indian River.
A “…massive search…” involving patrol deputies, investigators, a Sheriff’s K-9 unit, and a Sheriff’s Office helicopter started in the area of a car lot in the 1300 block of North Dixie Freeway. New Smyrna Beach police and the Volusia County Beach Patrol assisted in the search as well. The search continued in that area through late afternoon Wednesday. The deputy who was attacked suffered minor cuts, lacerations and bruises, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Dejesus is described as 5-9 in height, around 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone who sees him is asked to call 911 to report the location.
