On October 12th, 2013, three frightened pups were brought in to a Houston city shelter (BARC) with little hope of leaving out the front door. But, as many in the rescue world know, volunteers can use social networking sites to make miracles happen. And for three unsuspecting dogs, they did.
The main image showed a sable colored small dog that initially appeared to just be holding his leg up in pain; but, sadly the brain processes what the eyes are seeing. There is no leg to speak of.
Instead, it just what appears to be three inches of a truncated femur protruding from the right thigh. It is apparent, with the lack of blood and presence of dirt and healing, that is a very old wound. The full image can be seen here. The front left foot has missing the skin and flesh for so long, the all the bones of the foot are dry exposed and worn down. Original graphic image can be seen here.
The other two mixes appear very thin are worn down.
They became city property after the owner surrendered them (no reason was publicly provided). An unnamed volunteer stayed past closing hours hoping to be able to network them with rescue groups. Pawsitively Texas has nearly 50,000 followers and once the graphic images were posted, they were shared thousands of times in just a few hours.
Pawsitively Texas reports that Houston police are investigating the case for cruelty charges, but if the owner was present to surrender the dogs, what did the owner say happened? They stated,
the owner said that she had gotten her leg caught in a rope and thought it was better until the leg fell off.
The dog is described as sweet, even in the most gruesome of circumstances. The post describes it as such:
Dog is missing its leg from the knee down on back right leg and there is about 3 inches of bone exposed and dried out. The left front foot has only exposed metacarpal bones stripped down to the bone and phalanges are missing completely and the bone is dried out. Dog is walking on this foot with a limp. There is a very foul odor from the leg. These do not appear to be recent injuries.
The other two dogs were gentle natured as well, and one of them is high heartworm positive.
Because of the large following on the page, rescues lined up to take the three dogs destined for death. Many followers rallied with pledges, support and prayers, and as of October 13th, all three dogs are safe and secured with another Houston rescue.
