Make A Difference Day is the nation’s largest day of volunteering and on Saturday October 26, Volunteers from Fifth Round Clothing and support from high end athletic clothing company Respect Your Universe (RYU) joined forces to host the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Ponytail Drive at Renaissance Salon and Day Spa in Visalia, California.
Nearly 774,370 American women will be diagnosed with cancer and one in three women will develop some form of cancer in her lifetime. These statistics make it abundantly clear that cancer will affect so many in some way. Hair loss, one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment, can be especially traumatic for a women fighting cancer.
“People do not realize how far a ponytail can go!” said Lacey Mendes, a hair stylist at Renaissance Salon and Day Spa. “A simple eight inch hair cut can change so many peoples lives.” For Mendes participating in an event like Make-a-Difference day is a chance to reflect on the memories she has of her grandmother losing her hair to cancer. It also provides an outlet for her to contribute her skills and talent as a stylist to help others in need, especially children.
“I think of young girls who are battling this disease and how important their hair is to them, hair loss can be hard to understand but having resources can help them feel better.”
Hair donations collected from the event will now be made into free, real-hair wigs by Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign partner HairWear and will be distributed for free to female cancer patients through the national network of American Cancer Society wig banks.
Lacey and her colleagues from Renaissance Salon and Day Spa donated their time and talent by spending the afternoon cutting pony-tails and appreciated the support from members of the community that donated their hair for a great cause.
By giving so selflessly of themselves, these individuals joined thousands of people across the country who took part in this year’s Make-a-Difference Day.
