LA Galaxy midfielder and overnight goalkeeper sensation Mike Magee was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 15 by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
Midfielder Magee raised his hand to stand between the posts for the Galaxy after goalkeeper Rohan Ricketts was injured in the 23rd minute and then back-up keeper Josh Saunders was red-carded in the 43rd minute for defending himself when San Jose Earthquakes forward Steven Lenhart tried to head the ball out of Saunders' hands.
Magee made four saves in 47 minutes of play to preserve the 0-0 tie against the Quakes who couldn't break through the ten-man Galaxy. Magee made the save of the day in the 89th minute when he dove at Lenhart, just as the forward struck the ball from inside the six-yard box.
Pro history
The Galaxy acquired Magee from the New York Red Bulls on January 14, 2009 in exchange for a second round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. Magee made his professional debut with the MetroStars in 2003 and became the youngest player in New York history, at that time at 18 years, 222 days, in the season opener versus Columbus.
