Volkswagen created a sensation last year with their Star Wars themed Super Bowl commercial featuring a diminutive Darth Vader trying to exert the force on everything from the family dog to the family Volkswagen. They have resurrected the Star Wars them in a commercial for Super Bowl XLVI.
While last year's well-received Super Bowl commercial starred a six-year-old boy named Max Page, this year's commercial focuses on the family dog and a wider cast of Star Wars characters.
The new commercial follows a pudgy pooch as it goes through a 1980s style workout montage to get in shape to chase the new Volkswagen Beetle. According to The Wall Street Journal, the commercial is titled "The Dog Strikes Back." This Super Bowl commercial will make its television premiere during the second quarter of the big game.
The dog succeeds at getting into car-chasing condition, but that's not where this Super Bowl commercial ends. The extended version of the ad is available online and offers an ending aimed to please Star Wars fans.
After the Volkswagen logo appears on the screen, the commercial shows the viewer a bar filled with Star Wars characters who have just watched the Beetle commercial on several flat screen television sets mounted behind the bar. These bar patrons are actually discussing which Volkswagen Super Bowl commercial they liked best. They seem equally divided, but Darth Vader himself is there to offer a tiebreaker of sorts in his own special way.
