Will our future bring U.S. factories as progressive as VW's?
As U.S. carmakers stumble through a fog of failure, desperately grasping for a key to unlock a prosperous future, Volkswagen pushes forward and sheds a light in the darkness. Built in Dresden to manufacture the Phaeton, VW's prestige luxury sedan, the Transparent Factory is like something from a futuristic world's fair display, or Tommorowland at Disney. But it's real and it's really building cars in a very new way.

Parts are delivered via special tram that uses public transportaion tracks.

No concrete floors, at the Transparent Factory they're surfaced in gorgeous real maple wood.
You don't get such creative thinking when you let bean counters run your car companies, as all U.S. carmakers have done. You need companies run by engineers and manufacturing visionaries. Those are the types that built the American car industry, a business which flourished until MBAs took control.

Amen.
Remember, this is a couple-year=old factory and assembly line. While foreign brands are building, we are either idling or retrofitting -- as Ford is doing.
Most Germans pick up their new cars at the factory -- you can do this for your new Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and at VW's main factory in Wolfsburg, near Stuttgart. So it's important that the factories are clean, and efficient for the buyers.
