In the midst of Mardi Gras, Volcom is also choosing to go green in the Volcom Pipe Pro event. As part of Volcom’s “New Future” initiative, the event will again run according to the green guidelines that SustainableSurf.org and ASP North America have partnered on to help reduce the environmental impact of all contests. That is not the only initiative that Volcom is making with this contest. For the first time ever, ESPN will be streaming a live ASP surfing event! The event is live in HD on ESPN3.com in addition to the customary streaming broadcast.
After a long holding period, the Volcom Pipe Pro began yesterday. Let the double dose of live streaming and amazing surfing begin! In day one, waves were erratic. As a result, wave selection was critical. Nic Van Rupp came close to a perfect score. But, the only $1,000 “Electric Perfect 10” score of the day went to Kawai Lindo. Unfortunately, in the battle for the wildcards, it would not be enough to take the leading position from Kauai's JD Irons. Other highlights include Hawaii's Makuakai Rothman and Kai Barger. Rothman’s backhanded barrel riding landed him the highest two-wave heat score of the day. Kai Barger had been working hard to recover from an ankle injury. It looks like it paid off. He advanced through his heat.
Day two kicked off this morning with triple-overhead waves! In the draw for day two will be superstars Kolohe Andino, John John Florence, Tanner Gudauskas, Nat Young, Jamie O'Brien, Alex Gray and Josh Kerr. With intense surf conditions, stacked heats, a $130,000 prize purse on the line, a new ESPN audience, and eco-friendly initiatives, this WQS 5-star event is certain to produce some equally grand results!
