Voices in the Wind: The Pigeon Drop

A woman, named Laura, approaches an older woman named Mildred. Laura explains that she found an envelope full of money along with a note. The wad of cash is actually a $100 bill wrapped around several $1 bills, but she calls another woman, Andrea, who appears to be a secretary. She reads it and says that it was from an illegal gambling transaction. When asked, Laura claims that the total amount added up to $50,000. Andrea claims that they may be able to split the money three ways, not needing to return the money to its owner. While Andrea goes to check, Laura sits with Mildred and tells a story of her husband’s death and their children that joined with her in the move.

Andrea arrives back and states that it is legal for splitting the money three ways after a 30-day period while her “boss” enters the serial numbers into the system. Andrea suggests that the claim registers under one person while each puts up a certain percentage as good-faith money. All three agree to put up $10,000 as good faith, with Mildred agreeing that it takes money to make money. Laura claims that she has insurance money to use to put forward. They put Mildred’s money into the envelope, giving her the other envelope to hold onto as the two head to get “their $10,000.” Andrea heads into the bathroom as Laura heads to her car to grab her insurance check, but finds the door to be locked, when Mildred calls on security. Both are put into custody as the police thank her for giving the note to the teller.

A “Pigeon Drop” is described by the story as a scam where a younger woman, who claims to have found a bag of money, approaches an older woman with the bag. Somebody else arrives who offers legal advice and leads the older woman to believe they have come to split a small fortune. Laura and Andrea believe they had a good scam going but the plan ends up getting overthrown by Mildred’s good acting. The episode works quite well as you’re thinking that Mildred is going to scammed by the two. The voice acting is well done, including a decent Tennessee accent being performed by the character of Laura. The twist of this con story works well, and if you’re a fan of heist and con stories, I'd definitely recommend checking this one out.
