Jazz vocalist Clif Payne celebrates songs by songwriters across the pop spectrum including Sting, Alec Wilder, Stevie Wonder, Vince Mendoza, Bill Withers May 16 at Angelica’s Angelica's Bell Theater and Bistro in Redwood City. The show begins at 6:30 p.m.
Harlem-born with decades of singing everything from R&B to classical, Broadway to folk, rock to gospel, Payne has forged a unique style that is his own jazz rendering. He's opened for Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, and Dionne Warwick. Clif's father, James, was a Harlem Renaissance reedsman with Lionel Hampton and Fletcher Henderson. Clif's mother, Aline, once backed Nat "King" Cole as a vocalist. Clif's cousin, Shandra, currently is a background vocalist for Martina McBride.
Accompanying Payne on May 16 will be Ron Belcher on upright bass, Maya Kronfeld on keyboard and Deszon Claiborne on drums. Concert includes one intermission.
