Thousands of images taken by the late Vivian Maier have exploded on the art scene since her black and white negatives were discovered in 2007. Her extraordinary eye for contrast, fascinating faces, touching situations and creative perspective of ordinary situations is evidenced in art shows around the world.

Among the exhibits is “Vivian Maier: A Photographic Journey.” Courtesy of the Jeffrey Goldstein Collection, the show is at The Art Center (TAC) now through July 12, 2014. Her work has been on exhibit since realtor and author John Maloof found her negatives and prints and showed them to Chicago Cultural Center curators. The Cultural Center followed up with “Finding Vivian Maier” in 2011.

As many of her photos were shot on the North Shore when she lived there as a nanny it’s appropriate to have them shown at a North Suburban art center.

Also at TAC, is “Vietnam Re-scene,” a watercolor exhibit by David E. Dallison. They are “plein-air” works that capture Vietnam’s exquisite scenery. Along with viewing the paintings, it is important to read Dallison’s statement about Vietnam: its people and where the country is today.

While there, be sure to see the students’ exhibition. Mounted just inside the parking lot entrance, it displays the works of really talented photographers.

Details: Current exhibits are up through July 12, 2014. The Art Center is open Mon.-Sat. from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. TAC is at 1957 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park 60035. For more information visit The Art Center or call 847-432-1888.
