Vitali Klitschko helps breakup a clash between protesters and police

Reuters reported Sunday that WBC titleholder Vitali Klitschko helped defuse a potentially explosive clash between political protesters and police in Kiev, Ukraine.

Opposition leaders planned to storm the offices of President Viktor Yanukovich in an attempt to force his government to resign.

However, using a microphone, the 6-foot-7, 247 pound Klitschko (45-2, 41 KOs) managed to somewhat calm, pacify, and breakup the angry mob.

"If this government does not want to fulfill the will of the people, then there will be no such government, there will be no such president. There will be a new government and a new president," said Klitschko, 42, who has never been floored as a professional and owns history’s second-highest heavyweight knockout percentage (87.76%).

Klitschko, who led the UDAR (Punch) party to a surprising third place finish last autumn, recently announced his candidacy for the 2015 Ukrainian presidential election.

“Dr. Ironfist” is supposed to battle mandatory challenger Bermane Stiverne in the spring.

Unfortunately for the 36-year-old Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 KOs), Klitschko hasn’t decided if he will again step into the squared circle and is basically holding the WBC hostage.

A former mayoral candidate who is 15-2 in world championship contests, Klitschko is one of the premier prizefighters ever.

Nevertheless, a natural commander who has the strong backing of Ukrainians, Klitschko’s clearly more engaged with public affairs than pugilism.

Accordingly, Vitali Klitschko must formally retire as a titleholder and focus on becoming the “new president.”
