Though traveling to Vanderbilt Beach in Naples Florida is not exactly a day trip from Indianapolis, it is a trip you can make in one day if you drive straight through. It is about an 18 hour drive from downtown Indianapolis to downtown Naples. I'm not recommending you drive straight through unless you have several drivers, and make sure that someone always stays awake with the driver. It is a very long drive and usually better if you plan an overnight stay on the way to Naples and on the way back.
There are lots of things to do when you get to Naples. My favorite is to be on the beach and we were fortunate to be invited to stay in a condo right on Vanderbilt Beach. Vanderbilt Beach is beautiful and the sunsets are some of the prettiest I've ever seen. I often spend hours just sitting on the sand watching the waves roll in.
It is great exercise to walk in the sand and you will see many people walking, and even some running, early in the morning and evening. A good idea is to take lots of sunscreen and chap stick and to keep applying it to avoid your lips being burnt. The one thing you don't want to do is get sunburned. A hat, flip flops, a beach umbrella, sunglasses and a water bottle are nice to have as well.
Vanderbilt Beach is also a great place to find seashells. If you get up early in the morning, usually you can find a lot of them. Just take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline with a plastic pail or a bag to keep your finds in.
The hotels along the beach looked very nice and I am sure they would be nice places to stay. It is so great being able to just walk outside and be on the beach. You don't have to worry about parking and carrying lots of things with you. The hotels I saw also provided chairs and umbrellas for their guests.
Whether you are looking like a nice long trip, or an escape from your everyday life, Naples is an excellent destination for someone of any age. I definitely recommend Naples, Florida as a wonderful destination.
