It is now summer in Australia and one of the best times to visit the Great Barrier Reef and one of the few coral cays that has a resort and a rain forest. Green Island with it's emerald waters, white sandy beaches and coral reefs is easy to see from the air, a true coral cay it is said to be 6000 years old, consists of 37 acres, is home to over 120 species of colorful birds, native plants, and marine life, and takes about 45 minutes to walk around.
As it is one of the most eco-sensitive developments on the barrier reef special attention has been paid to the developments. All resort infrastructures and buildings are done with minimal vegetation clearance, and in some instances structures were built around the trees. No buildings extend above the tree canopy, most have no gutters allowing rainfall to replinish the moisture needed for the vegetation.
While it is possible to stay at a hotel in Cairns and take day trips to the island, there is something special about staying on Green Island. The Cay has only two styles of accommodations - reef suites and island suites - comprising 46 suites in the rain forest, secluded away from the day visitors facilities. Each site is elegantly appointed, each has private balconies, some have inter-connecting or adjoining rooms, and there are disabled room facilities. Actually the entire resort is wheelchair accessible.
On the small island dining is limited to a few options,
(1) a casual outdoor grill serves burgers and grill specialities, along with a daily barbecue lunch
(2) the Emerald Restaurant gives diners the choice of dining on the outdoor terrace or in the air-conditioned dining room
(3) guests staying overnight on the island can enjoy a seafood dinner on the beach, while watching the beautiful sunset.
Among the many activities on the island are - glass bottom tours, snorkeling, windsurfing, parasailing, seawalking helmet diving, visits to the crocodile habit and the oldest underwater observatory.
Hotel Rates are in Australian dollars and cost, for 2 people in an Island suite, 650AUD per night, in a Reef suite 750AUD. This includes the transfers by catamaran from Cairns, many of the activities, goods & service tax.
