Google chairman Eric Schmidt arrived in North Korea on Monday along with former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.
The American delegation led by Schmidt and Richardson claim they are in the communist nation to take a first hand look at North Korea's economy and social media.
New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is also expected to discuss the case of a U.S. citizen jailed in the country.
Why is Google in North Korea?
Google states that the visit to North Korea is not an official visit on behalf of the company, but is a private visit.
According to a New York Times article the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency confirmed the American group’s arrival calling it “a Google delegation.”
Is there a Google motive for the trip?
Why would Eric Schmidt want to take a look at North Korea's social media? There is no social media in North Korea. Is North Korea ready to open up internet access to its citizens?
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt visit to North Korea raises many interesting questions. We will be watching to see what spin Schmidt places on the the visit when he returns to the United States.
