Looking for a fun Tennesee road trip? Tennessee Overhill is comprised of parts of North Carolina and East Tennessee. It is part of the beautiful Cherokee National Forest. The driving route takes visitors through rural and remote areas of Tennessee. Cell phones may not always have a reliable signal but travelers are always assured of stunning scenery.
The Tennessee town of Etowah on Highway 411 is only a few miles from the forest. It is called the 'Gateway to the Cherokee National Forest' for good reason. Travelers can pick up almost anything they need here. Etowah provides easy access, gas stations, groceries and a few fast food restaurants. Brochures and maps can be picked at the Chamber of Commerce. Extra camera batteries can be picked up at dollar type or sundry stores.
Lodging in the Tennessee Overhill consists of lodges, campgrounds and RV parks and cabins. There are a number of bed and breakfast locations. National hotel chains are in the larger towns on the edge of the Cherokee National Forest.
The Cherokee National Forest is a popular road trip partly because it offers so many recreational activities. Travelers can fish (local and state regulations apply) or explore miles of hiking trails. There are picnic spots and scenic overlooks. Museums and historic sites complete the mix.
Tennessee Overhill of the Cherokee National Forest has a visitors center in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. There is a gift shop and bookstore. There is plenty of available parking. The staff are knowledgeable the area and friendly. Maps, brochures and other information are available at this visitors center.
The Ocoee River scenic drive and Cherohala Skyway are the two nationally designated Scenic Byways. Information on these are available at the Etowah Chamber of Commerce and the Tellico Plains visitors center.
