Visit scenic Lake Gregory over spring break

See also

A day trip to Lake Gregory Regional Park, or an overnight stay at one of the nearby lodging accommodations can get you and your children out of the house over spring break. The lake provides a nesting area and feeding ground for ducks that live there year-round, and it is stocked with trout and bass. Bait and fishing licenses are available at Ace Hardware and 7/11 on Lake Drive in Crestline, within walking distance of Lake Gregory. Visitors can enjoy hiking on the paths within the park or making a complete circuit on the jogging path the runs around the entire park, which also hosts a small dog park.

In the summer months, the beach is available for a small fee, about $5 per person, with swimming, water slides and other play areas. Paddle boats are available for rental.

Nearby shops on Lake Drive include Goodwin’s market, restaurants, book stores, antiques and collectibles shops, thrift stores, a Laundromat and the Crestline Post Office. While you’re there, be sure to check out the sale at McCabe’s & Company Booksellers, which is closing forever on March 31, 2014.

Pay a visit to the bowling alley, where you can enjoy pizza or Subway sandwiches, in addition to some fun rolling the balls at the pins or dropping quarters into the arcade games.

Crestline and Lake Gregory are at a much lower elevation than the ski resorts, so altitude is not as much of a problem. Crestline ranges from 4,300 to 4,800 feet, while the ski resorts range from 6,000 to 7,500 feet.

Highway 18, which has two lanes each way, is open and dry, with no chain requirements. It has not snowed in over a month, and the daytime temperatures are in the 60s.

Crestline and Lake Gregory offer all sorts of family-friendly activities. If you plan to stay overnight, reservations are a good idea. Available accommodations include:
