If you are looking for a unique way to choose a pumpkin to decorate this fall the Danbury Railroad Museum www.danbury.org/drm could be a perfect and unusual option to celebrate fall and pumpkins. The dedicated volunteer staff of the museum has organized a ride on a vintage train to a pumpkin patch for three weekends in October, rain or shine that is sure to bring smiles to young and old alike.
On the weekends of October 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 visitors can ride the pumpkin patch train through a historic rail yard in a coach that dates back to the 1920's. A restored 1953 rail diesel car or a vintage ALCO RS-1 will pull the coach through a fascinating rail yard that has many vintage coaches to admire on the way to the pumpkin patch where each child will receive a free pumpkin.
After riding the train, kids can visit the museum that is located in the adjacent 100 year old Danbury Train Station. The museum has an interesting collection of exhibits including multiple operating model train layouts. Free cider and cookies, a coloring station and temporary tattoos add to the fun. Kids are even encouraged to come in costume.
The trains depart hourly beginning on the half hour of each opening day; Saturday trains run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday the trains run from noon to 4 p.m. The Danbury RR Museum is located on 120 White Street in Danbury and is staffed by volunteers dedicated to preserving train history.
The Naugatuck Railroad Museum, www.rmne.org is offering a one hour and 15 minute scenic train ride on October 12 & 13, 19 & 20 and 26 & 27. The trains will leave the Thomaston Station located on 242 East Main Street in Thomaston at noon and 2 p.m. The train will stop at "Naugy's" own pumpkin patch where each child can choose their pumpkin before re-boarding the train and heading back to the station.
