Visine Poisoning: Man poisoned his girlfriend’s drink with Visine

The story of Visine poisoning near Sacramento is making crime and court headlines in San Francisco.

Police in Grass Valley say that a woman is recovering after her boyfriend put Visine eye drops in her drink, ABC News reported Monday.

Nevada County Sheriff deputies arrested Shayne Carpenter, 27, on Thursday. He was booked on domestic violence and poisoning charges. Sheriff investigators say that after a fight with his girlfriend, Carpenter put Visine eye drop in her drink. That caused her to feel sick.

Lt. Steve Tripp of the Nevada County Sheriff Department told KXTV News 10 that texting ultimately led to Carpenter’s arrest. His girlfriend became suspicious after finding texts on Carpenter's phone to his friends about the alleged prank gone wrong. (KXTV video of the Visine poisoning case can be found here.)

"He was making texts to his buddies that if 'She's going to be talking crap then she's going to be crapping,'" Tripp said.

Police say the girlfriend was feeling ill and after seeing the text called police.

Police said that they set up a sting by having Carpenter’s girlfriend talk to him about the alleged eye drop poisoning over the phone. Carpenter admitted to adding Visine to her drink.

"We got admissions from him over the phone, when he was admitting to her, that he had done this," Tripp said.

Carpenter’s girlfriend was treated and release from a hospital.

Carpenter is free on bail now. He posted the $25,000 bond on Friday.

Police say they are taking the case of Visine poisoning very seriously and it is not a harmless prank.
