Visine poisoning: 27-year-old poisons girlfriend

Visine poisoning is a strange headline but the story is even more strange. On March 11, Mail Online reported that 27-year-old Shayne Carpenter tried to poison his girlfriend by putting Visine drops in her drinks. Carpenter was arrested in Grass Valley, Calif. last week.

"She told them that the couple had been fighting, and said that soon afterwards she began to feel inexplicably ill. The unnamed woman looked at Carpenter's phone, and found he was boasting that he had poisoned her by putting Visine in her drinks, she said" (via Mail Online). Carpenter's girlfriend went to police and was instructed to call Carpenter while they listened in.

The Visine poisoning was admitted by Carpenter and police showed up and arrested him for domestic violence and poisoning. His girlfriend was taken to a local hospital and has recovered. Carpenter was released on bail and it's unknown if he was given a "no-contact" order to stay away from the woman who he tried to poison.

Some reports make it seem like Carpenter wasn't trying to "kill" his girlfriend -- just give her a taste of poison (which could have killed her, who knows?). The way he joked about what he was doing -- and the fact that it's being called a "prank" -- makes many wonder if he was just having some sinister "fun."

Visine poisoning isn't common and it's unclear whether or not the eye drops could actually cause someone to die. Obviously Visine isn't meant to be ingested. It's also unknown how much Carpenter's girlfriend actually drank.
