Toyota has teamed up with Discovery Education to provide teen drivers a virtual experience to learn about distractions and driving. Heads Up, a web-based interactive experience that shows teen drivers how easily texting and other distractions while driving can result in accidents, is part of a comprehensive website called Toyota Teen Driver. The website offers students, parents, and educators with information and resources to increase awareness of the importance of non-distracted driving.
According to the CDC, auto accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. Those at highest risk are males, teens driving with teen passengers, and newly licensed teens. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that 20% of injury accidents in 2009 involved distracted driving and of those distracted drivers, the teenage group had the highest percentage, with 16% of all teenage drivers who were involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents were reported to be distracted at the time of the accident.
Texas has managed to reduce the number of teen crashes through efforts such as its peer-to-peer safety program, Texas Teens in the Driver's Seat, and because of its graduated driver's license program.
