Virginia Tech wins 2013 ACC mat crown with five individual champs

Virginia Tech won the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Wrestling Championships by claiming half the ten individual titles up for grabs at the University of Maryland in College Park Saturday evening.

To take the team title, the Hokies compiled 95 points on the strength of five champs: Jarrod Garnett at 125 pounds, Nick Brascetta at 149, Jesse Dong at 157, Peter Yates at 165, and David Malone at heavyweight.

University of Virginia placed second in the team standings, with one individual titlewinner: George DiCamillo at 133 pounds.

Host school Maryland, 2012 ACC champs, came in third. A trio of Terps won individual titles: Josh Asper at 174, Jimmy Sheptock 184, and Christian Boley at 197.

Evan Henderson's 141-pound championship helped propel the University of North Carolina to fourth place in the team title race.

The ACC will have at minimum 30 wrestlers qualify for the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, to be held in Des Moines March 21-23.
