Across the board, Virginia students outperformed students nationwide in all three sections of the tests last year that include reading, math and writing. Here in Virginia, scores were up in all three areas of the tests, while nationwide, reading scores were flat and writing and math scores actually declined.
While many of us are still reeling after hearing the results of last years Standards of Learning tests, it may be that we need to look at the bigger picture that is beginning to emerge.
Remember that the Virginia SOL tests were created as part of the waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Virginia's top educators have given our children a challenge, and one that is not impossible to overcome.
If many of you can recall, there were people, teachers included, that said the new SOLs were too hard and too much, too soon. Well, it looks like our senior classes did pretty darned good, didn't they?
With sagging SOLs and top-notch SAT scores, let's give our students a chance, and give them the support they need at this time. Those schools that are failing need our support the most, of course, so let's not fail them.
