British researchers have found that violent media meant for adults has a detrimental effect on children who are exposed to this type of media. Exposure to violent media often causes children to become either aggressive or timid. Older children were found to be less affected than younger children; however, older boys who were exposed to violent media were more affected by it than were older girls.
The researchers noted that children who grew up in violent homes had a greater chance of being negatively affected by violent media than were children who did not grow up in violent households. These children who grew up in violent households tended to act out some of the images they saw on the screen. Children who did not grow up in a violent home developed behavior much the opposite of their research group – they became very fearful of potential crime situations. Children tend to want to see movies and video games they cannot handle; therefore, researchers suggest that parents step in and monitor what their children are watching.
