Wearing a long red dress, Viola stood on stage and delivered an inspiring speech that touched on her passion for acting and her strong desire to pay homage to black maids of the past who were never afforded the opportunity to pursue their passions.
Here’s some of Viola’s speech from the Critics’ Choice Awards:
"They say the two most important days in a person’s life is the day you're born and the day you discover why you're born.
Five hours on the bus going to acting classes when I was 14-years-old and coming from very challenging circumstances. I absolutely knew I wanted to be an actor because I wanted to be somebody. I wanted to dream big, and make a mark somehow. And that's something absolutely Aibileenwas not afforded. I considered it my honor to pay homage to these women of this time period who were not allowed to dream and not allowed to find their purpose. But thank God and praise God that they gave birth to me, my mother, and my grandmother.”
