On Wednesday, August 10, 2011, actress Viola Davis spoke with the 700 Club to discuss her new inspirational film “The Help.” The Disney movie takes place in Mississippi during the early 60s and is based upon the New York Times Best Selling book by the same name written by Kathryn Stockett. Focusing on lives of three women during the civil rights movement, Davis plays Abileen Clark, a domestic worker who along with another woman, Skinny, share their stories with a recent journalism graduate, Skeeter, played by Emma Stone. Davis spoke about the powerful scene that took place in the church that has caught the attention of Christians nationwide.
The film takes a close look at the relationships between “The Help” or the black women that raised the white children in prominent Southern families, yet due to racial barriers and Jim Crow laws were unable to become truly close to their employers. In the interview with the 700 Club, Viola Davis described the church scene.
“Abileen is a strong believer,” Davis spoke about her character in reference to Jesus Christ. “She writes down her prayers because she believes her prayers have power when they are written down. And actually, every time she writes them down they come to fruition.” Davis continued, “So once she’s in that church and she’s conflicted, it’s going back and forth, that’s where she finds her purpose and her strength- right in that scene.”
Other actors in “The Help” include Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of Ron Howard), Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Mike Vogel, Sissy Spacek and Mary Steenburgen.
Octavia Spencer referred to the Christian audience that will watch the PG-13 film and stated, “One of the big things to me about this movie is courage. Cicero said it best, “A man full of courage is also full of faith.” Continuing she stated, “And I think what your viewing audience will take from that is the faith that we all have in each other, that we have in God and that we have in our relationships.”
