Vintage behind-the-scenes photographs of major 20th century films, from "Funny Face" to "The Creature from the Black Lagoon", are displayed through May 26 at the American Film Institute's AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, near Washington, D.C.

The exhibit "Behind the Fourth Wall: Actors and Directors on the Set 1926-2001" has 50 photographs, many never before seen by the public. Here're just a few:

  • Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn on location at the Eiffel Tower in "Funny Face" (1957)
  • Kim Novak, Frank Sinatra, and Otto Preminger on the set of "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955)
  • Marlon Brando, Angie Dickinson, director Arthur Penn on the set of "The Chase" (1966)
  • "West Side Story" (1961) co-directors Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise on location in New York City
  • Martin Sheen, Art Garfunkel, and Alan Arkin, on the set of "Catch-22" (1970)
  • Donald Sutherland, director Alan J. Pakula, and Jane Fonda on the set of "Klute" (1971)
  • Ricou Browning as the creature in an underwater set from "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954)
  • Director Fritz Lang, cinematographer Karl Freund, and Brigitte Helm on the set of "Metropolis" (1927).

The exhibit, free with the purchase of a movie ticket, was mounted by Royal Books, a rare book dealer in midtown Baltimore. Royal Books has a specialty in American and world cinema, and offers rare and original scripts, photographs, posters, and other unique material related to film history.

"Motion pictures were the dominant art for the 20th century...(they) owned the 20th century. It will not be so in the 21st century," wrote critic-writer ("Taxi Driver")-director ("American Gigolo") Paul Schrader in "Film Comment".
