Wizards of the Coast has announced a new Magic: The Gathering product today, Vintage Masters. These new packs will feature playable copies of the Power 9, classic cards that can command price tags upwards of hundreds to thousands of dollars on the secondary market. What’s the catch? These cards are on the Reserve List, and are not eligible to be reprinted in physical form - So these classic powerhouses will only be available on Magic: The Gathering Online.
The set will launch in June of 2014 complete with a full suite of prerelease events. This set will basically be the online incarnation of “Modern Masters” and will allow Wizards of the Coast to “print” essentially anything they’d like. Booster packs will run $6.99, and this will probably be the only time players will be able to get a chance to get their hands on a foil version of an Ancestral Recall or Black Lotus. Along with the release, the Vintage play format will be added to Magic: The Gathering Online. The set will be designed to facilitate Limited draft and sealed play, but expect the possibly of some degenerate things happening with the Power 9 and other (expected) old-school cards in the mix.
Magic: The Gathering Online players have already had a chance to get a taste of the Power 9 in some of the Cube tournaments, but this time they’ll be able to collect and keep these vintage treasures “for real”. The set size has not yet been announced.
A reprint run of this nature has been speculated for some time, but with consumers more willing to back digital-only products it seems like a natural way to bring back some classic cards and breathe some life into alternative formats on Magic: The Gathering Online. Needless to say, these cards will not be eligible to redeem for their physical versions.
